Archie Gray became Tottenham Hotspur’s youngest captain in a competitive match during the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
Gray captained Tottenham against Brentford, breaking a club record previously held by Steve Perryman. He was 20 years and 260 days old when he led the side, making the achievement notable even though Tottenham lost the match 3–0.
The captaincy came during a match that also featured several Tottenham debuts, including Sandro Tonali, Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke. Those names can therefore be confused with the record-holder.
Gray’s achievement concerns Tottenham’s competitive-match captaincy record, not the Premier League’s youngest captain overall. The record was specifically reported as a club mark, replacing Perryman’s previous benchmark.
