Which three promoted clubs appeared in the 2026–27 Premier League opening round?

The story behind the answer

Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City were the three promoted clubs in the 2026–27 Premier League opening round.

Coventry City opened the season away to Arsenal on Friday. Ipswich Town visited Sunderland on Saturday, while Hull City hosted Manchester United in the early Saturday fixture.

The three clubs reached the Premier League from the Championship through different routes. Coventry returned after 25 years away, Ipswich returned after one year, and Hull returned after nine years. Their simultaneous presence made the first round a useful snapshot of the season’s promotion story.

They replaced West Ham United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers, who had been relegated at the end of the previous Premier League season. Leeds United and Sunderland were also in the opening round, but Leeds had already been promoted in the previous campaign and Sunderland were not among the three promoted clubs for 2026–27.
