Tesla began delivering the Model Y in March 2020. The vehicle was positioned as a crossover utility model, combining a higher seating position and flexible cargo space with technology and components related to the Model 3 sedan.
Tesla offered the Model Y with different battery, drivetrain, and seating configurations over time. The original launch versions included Long Range and Performance variants, while a seven-seat option was later offered in some markets.
The Model Y is part of Tesla’s four-character naming history: Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y. Together, the names spell “S3XY,” although Tesla used the number 3 rather than the letter E because Ford held a trademark related to “Model E.”
