Which Tesla model was the company’s first electric SUV?

The story behind the answer

The Tesla Model X was the company’s first electric SUV.

Tesla introduced the Model X as a larger vehicle related to the Model S sedan. It combined three-row seating with an electric powertrain and was designed to compete in the growing luxury sport-utility market. Customer deliveries began in 2015.

The Model X became especially recognizable for its powered falcon-wing rear doors, although those doors are not the answer here. The vehicle also offered features such as all-wheel drive through dual electric motors and seating for up to seven people in certain configurations.

The Model Y arrived later as a smaller crossover based closely on the Model 3. Because the Model Y is more compact and became highly visible in global sales, some readers mistakenly identify it as Tesla’s first SUV. The Model X holds that earlier position in Tesla’s vehicle lineup.
