Which teams drew 2–2 in the 2026–27 Premier League opening round?

The story behind the answer

Newcastle United and Liverpool drew 2–2 in the 2026–27 Premier League opening round.

The match was played at St James’ Park on Sunday 23 August 2026. It was the third Premier League fixture scheduled that day, following the simultaneous 14:00 matches involving Manchester City and Brighton.

The four-goal draw gave both clubs one point. It was one of two opening-round matches to produce four goals, alongside Brighton’s 4–0 victory over Aston Villa.

Liverpool began the season under new manager Andoni Iraola, who had previously managed Bournemouth. Newcastle also had a new head coach, Matthias Jaissle, appointed shortly before the campaign began after Eddie Howe’s departure.
