India won the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in 2007.
The final was played on 24 September 2007 at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, where India defeated Pakistan by five runs. India scored 157 for 5, and Pakistan were bowled out for 152 with three balls remaining. Irfan Pathan was named player of the match after taking three wickets.
The tournament was the first ICC global competition played under the Twenty20 International format. India entered with a relatively young squad led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, while several senior players, including Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, did not participate. India also defeated Pakistan earlier in the group stage through a bowl-out after their match was tied.
A common mix-up is confusing this title with India’s later T20 World Cup victories. The 2007 event was officially called the ICC World Twenty20; the competition was later renamed the ICC World Twenty20 and then the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
