Manchester City staged a late 2–1 comeback against Bournemouth on the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
Manchester City hosted AFC Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, 23 August 2026. Bournemouth led for much of the match, but City scored twice in the closing stages to turn the game around and begin the season with three points.
Marcus Tavernier put Bournemouth ahead in the 84th minute, leaving the visitors close to a memorable away victory. Manchester City responded quickly through a late equaliser and then completed the turnaround when Joško Gvardiol scored in the second minute of stoppage time.
The result began Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City reign with a win. It was one of two major late moments on the Sunday schedule: Liverpool also scored deep into stoppage time to draw 2–2 at Newcastle. City’s comeback, however, converted a defeat into a victory.
