Which team led the 2026–27 Premier League table after the opening round?

The story behind the answer

Brighton & Hove Albion led the 2026–27 Premier League table after the opening round.

Brighton opened the campaign by defeating Aston Villa 4–0 on 23 August 2026. The four-goal margin gave Brighton a superior goal difference to the other opening-round winners, placing them first after all ten matches had been completed.

Arsenal and Brentford also recorded three-goal victories, beating Coventry City and Tottenham Hotspur respectively. Everton won 2–0 against Crystal Palace, while Hull City, Ipswich Town, Chelsea, Manchester City and Leeds United also collected three points. Brighton’s larger margin therefore decided the early ranking.

Opening-round league tables can be misleading because every club has played only once. They are still official standings, however, and goal difference is used when teams have equal points. Brighton’s position was especially eye-catching because the club finished the opening round above Arsenal, the defending champions. The early lead reflected one emphatic result rather than a meaningful prediction of the final title race.
