Which team holds the record for the highest innings total in a Test match?

The story behind the answer

Sri Lanka holds the record for the highest innings total in a Test match, scoring 952 for 6 declared against India in Colombo in 1997. The enormous total remains the highest by any team in Test history.

Sri Lanka batted for more than two days at the R. Premadasa Stadium after India made 537. Sanath Jayasuriya scored 340, Roshan Mahanama made 225 and the pair shared a record partnership of 576 for the second wicket. Arjuna Ranatunga then declared at 952 for 6, giving Sri Lanka a lead of 415 runs.

The match ended in a draw after India made 537 in its first innings and Sri Lanka did not have enough time to force a result. The score is often written as 952/6d: “d” means the captain declared the innings closed while six wickets had fallen.

This is a team-innings record, not an individual batting record. Sri Lanka’s 952 exceeds England’s 903 against Australia and Pakistan’s 765 against Sri Lanka, while the highest individual score in the record-setting innings was Jayasuriya’s 340.
