Italy has the longest gap between consecutive World Cup wins, waiting 44 years between its 1938 and 1982 titles.
Italy won its first two championships in 1934 and 1938 under coach Vittorio Pozzo. The Second World War then interrupted the World Cup, and Italy did not win again until 1982, when Enzo Bearzot’s team defeated West Germany 3–1 in the final in Madrid. The gap between those triumphs spans nine World Cup editions.
This record is often confused with a country’s gap between any two final appearances or with an ongoing drought since its last title. It specifically compares successive championships won by the same nation. Italy’s 44-year interval is therefore longer than Brazil’s 32-year wait between 1962 and 1994, and longer than Argentina’s 36-year wait between 1986 and 2022.
Italy later won a fourth title in 2006, defeating France on penalties in Berlin. Its championship history is unusual: two early victories, a long interruption, and then two modern-era triumphs.
