Which team did Everton defeat 2–0 to begin the 2026–27 Premier League season?

The story behind the answer

Everton defeated Crystal Palace 2–0 to begin the 2026–27 Premier League season. The match was played at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium on 22 August 2026.

The win gave Everton their first opening Premier League victory in five years and ended a run of eight top-flight matches without a win. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Thierno Barry scored either side of half-time, giving Everton a comfortable result in their first match of the campaign.

Crystal Palace began the season under new manager Pierre Sage. Their afternoon became more difficult when defender Chadi Riad suffered an apparent serious knee injury and left the pitch on a stretcher. Everton’s result was one of three 2–0 victories in the opening round, alongside Hull City’s win over Manchester United and Arsenal’s eventual 3–0 victory over Coventry.
