Which team became only the fourth to score four first-half goals in Premier League Matchweek 1 with its 2026–27 opening win?

The story behind the answer

Brighton & Hove Albion became only the fourth team to score four first-half goals in Premier League Matchweek 1 with its 2026–27 opening win.

Brighton raced into a 4–0 lead against Aston Villa, scoring all four goals during the opening 31 minutes. The final score remained 4–0, making the result one of the most emphatic performances of the round. Villa also played much of the match with 10 men, which contributed to Brighton’s dominance.

The Premier League noted that Brighton joined Bolton Wanderers, Manchester United and Liverpool as the only teams to score four first-half goals in a Matchweek 1 fixture. Bolton achieved the feat in 2001, Manchester United in 2007 and Liverpool in 2020. Brighton therefore became the fourth club to appear on that short list.

This is narrower than asking which team won 4–0. The historical distinction concerns the timing of the goals and the opening matchweek, not simply the final margin. Brighton’s Jack Hinshelwood scored twice, but the record belongs to the team rather than to one individual player.
