The symbol adopted for the Indian rupee in 2010 is ₹.
India selected the rupee sign, ₹, through a national design competition. The Government of India officially adopted it on 15 July 2010. The design combines the Devanagari letter र, used for the word rupee, with a horizontal form resembling the Latin capital R.
The symbol was created by D. Udaya Kumar, then a student at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. It was intended to give the rupee a distinct visual identity, similar to the established symbols used for currencies such as the dollar, pound and euro.
Before adoption, the rupee was commonly represented with abbreviations such as Rs, Re or रू depending on language and context. The Indian rupee’s international code remains INR, and the symbol should not be confused with the symbols for the South Korean won, Turkish lira or Russian ruble.
