Which currency has the ISO 4217 code XAF and is used by six Central African countries?

The story behind the answer

The currency with ISO 4217 code XAF used by six Central African countries is the Central African CFA franc.

XAF is used by Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. These countries form the Central African Economic and Monetary Community, known by its French acronym CEMAC. The Bank of Central African States, or BEAC, issues the currency.

The CFA franc has a fixed exchange-rate relationship with the euro. Its name originally referred to the French colonial monetary system, but the acronym is now associated with African financial cooperation. The currency is divided into 100 centimes, although centime coins are not generally used in everyday circulation.

The main confusion is with the West African CFA franc, whose ISO code is XOF. XAF and XOF are separate currencies issued by different regional central banks, even though both have the same exchange-rate relationship with the euro and share the CFA name.
