What currency is the sole legal tender of Iceland?

The story behind the answer

The Icelandic króna is the sole legal tender of Iceland.

Iceland’s modern króna emerged after the country separated its monetary system from Denmark during the early twentieth century. The currency is related historically to other Nordic currencies whose names derive from the word for “crown.”

The Central Bank of Iceland issues Icelandic banknotes and coins. The króna has the ISO 4217 code ISK and is divided into 100 aurar, although aurar coins are no longer used in ordinary transactions.

The Icelandic króna is not the same currency as Sweden’s krona, Norway’s krone, or Denmark’s krone. Iceland is part of the European Economic Area but is not an EU member and has retained its own national currency.
