Vanessa Paradis was the face of Chanel’s Coco fragrance in the famous 1991 television campaign.
Paradis appeared in a whimsical commercial directed by Jean-Paul Goude, portraying a woman swinging inside a birdcage while the campaign used the song “Stormy Weather.” The imaginative advertisement became one of Chanel’s best-known fragrance campaigns.
Although Paradis was a singer and actress rather than a conventional runway supermodel, fashion coverage often places her among the era’s major fashion icons. She continued her relationship with Chanel in later campaigns, including advertisements for the brand’s handbags.
The campaign is sometimes confused with Chanel’s No. 5 advertising, which used different celebrities and models. Coco is a separate Chanel fragrance, launched in 1984 and named after founder Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel.
