Kate Moss was named VH1’s Model of the Year at the 1997 Fashion Awards.
The recognition came during Moss’s rise from a teenage model discovered in London to one of the most influential faces of the 1990s. Her slim, youthful look differed from the glamorous, taller image associated with some earlier supermodels, and she became strongly connected with the decade’s minimalist and “heroin chic” fashion imagery.
Moss worked with major designers, photographers, and brands, including Calvin Klein. Her advertising and editorial appearances made her a defining figure in the transition from the exuberant supermodel culture of the early 1990s to the more pared-back aesthetic that followed.
The award is sometimes confused with British Fashion Council honors, which used different categories and dates. It is also distinct from later model-of-the-year awards given by fashion magazines or industry organizations. The VH1 award specifically belongs to the 1997 Fashion Awards.
