Which Sunderland striker won the 1999-2000 Premier League Golden Boot?
Answer
Kevin Phillips
Answer
Kevin Phillips
Kevin Phillips won the 1999–2000 Premier League Golden Boot with Sunderland.
Phillips scored 30 league goals, finishing seven ahead of Newcastle United’s Alan Shearer, who had 23. His goals helped Sunderland secure a respectable seventh-place finish in their first Premier League season after promotion from the First Division.
The award made Phillips the first Englishman to win the Premier League Golden Boot since its introduction in 1992. He was also the first Sunderland player to become the division’s leading scorer, and his 30-goal haul remains one of the greatest individual seasons by a newly promoted club’s striker.
Niall Quinn was Phillips’s Sunderland strike partner and contributed important goals and assists, but he was not the Golden Boot winner. Andy Cole and Michael Owen were also prominent scorers in the era, yet neither led the 1999–2000 standings.
