Which studio recorded most of Metallica’s 1991 album Metallica?

The story behind the answer

One on One Recording Studios recorded most of Metallica’s 1991 album Metallica.

The Los Angeles studio hosted the main recording sessions, which began in October 1990 and continued through the album’s intensive production period. Metallica worked there with producer Bob Rock while developing the record’s more direct and polished sound.

The album was not made in only one location. The band also recorded at Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver for about a week, and additional overdubs and mixing took place at A&M Studios in Hollywood. Those other locations are sometimes mistakenly identified as the primary studio.

One on One is especially associated with the album because its main sessions captured the band adjusting to Rock’s collaborative recording method. The finished record marked a stylistic shift from the denser, more technically intricate approach of ...And Justice for All.
