Which startup was founded by Vlad Tenev and Baiju Bhatt?
Answer
Robinhood
Answer
Robinhood
Vlad Tenev and Baiju Bhatt founded Robinhood.
The two entrepreneurs founded Robinhood in April 2013 after previously building high-frequency trading software for financial institutions in New York City. Their goal was to make investing more accessible through a mobile-first service with commission-free trading and a simple user interface. The company’s name refers to the legendary Robin Hood and its stated mission of broadening access to financial markets.
Tenev and Bhatt first presented the app at the LA Hacks hackathon in 2014. A beta version appeared on Apple’s App Store in December 2014, followed by an official launch in March 2015. Robinhood later expanded beyond stock trading into options, cryptocurrency, cash-management products, and other financial services.
The founders were co-chief executives from 2013 until 2020, when Tenev became sole CEO and Bhatt moved into a chief creative role. Wealthfront, Stash, and Acorns are also investment platforms, but none was founded by this particular pair. “Robinhood” is therefore the canonical answer.
