Asana was co-founded by Dustin Moskovitz and Justin Rosenstein.
The two entrepreneurs met while working at Facebook, where they built an internal productivity tool called Tasks to help teams coordinate projects, assignments, and deadlines. They left Facebook in 2008 and developed that idea into Asana, whose name comes from a Sanskrit term associated with a meditative posture.
Asana first became available outside beta in November 2011 and launched commercially in April 2012. It is often grouped with project-management tools such as Trello, Basecamp, and Monday.com, but those are separate products with different founders. Asana is broader than a simple task list: it supports projects, goals, calendars, reporting, files, team communication, and workflow management. The company went public through a direct listing on the New York Stock Exchange in 2020.
