Bezos incorporated the company on July 5, 1994, in Bellevue, Washington, initially under the name Cadabra, Inc. He had left investment firm D. E. Shaw after deciding to pursue the rapidly growing internet economy. The business began as an online bookstore because books offered enormous selection, relatively low prices, and strong demand.

The name changed to Amazon later in 1994 after a lawyer reportedly misheard “Cadabra” as “cadaver.” Bezos chose Amazon partly to evoke the world’s largest river and his ambition to build the world’s largest bookstore. The website opened for public sales on July 16, 1995.

Amazon is often remembered primarily as a retailer, but it later expanded into music, video, electronics, logistics, cloud computing, streaming, and devices.
