Which Star Wars card game did Wizards of the Coast launch in 2002?

The story behind the answer

Wizards of the Coast launched the Star Wars Trading Card Game in 2002.

The game was released during the merchandising period surrounding Star Wars: Episode II—Attack of the Clones. Players built decks from cards representing characters, units, locations, weapons, and events drawn from the Star Wars universe. The design used separate sides and strategic combat to reflect the conflict between the Galactic Republic and Separatist forces, as well as other major factions.

This game is often confused with Decipher’s Star Wars Customizable Card Game, which debuted in 1995 and used a different rules system. Wizards of the Coast also published the Star Wars role-playing game, but that was a tabletop RPG rather than a trading-card product.

The card game’s 2002 launch places it firmly in the prequel-era collectible-card market, alongside the film’s broader wave of toys, games, books, and trading cards.
