Which stadium hosted the 2011 Cricket World Cup final?

The story behind the answer

The 2011 Cricket World Cup final was hosted at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India. India defeated Sri Lanka there by six wickets on 2 April 2011 to win the tournament.

Sri Lanka batted first and scored 274 for six, with Mahela Jayawardene making a century. India chased the target successfully, reaching 277 for four in 48.2 overs. Gautam Gambhir scored 97, while captain MS Dhoni finished unbeaten on 91 and hit the winning six.

The match was historically significant because India became the first country to win a Cricket World Cup on home soil. It was also the first World Cup final contested by two Asian teams and the first involving two co-hosts.

Wankhede Stadium, located beside Mumbai’s Marine Drive, opened in 1974 and replaced the nearby Brabourne Stadium as Mumbai’s principal international cricket ground. It was later renovated and remains one of India’s best-known cricket venues.
