Taekwondo made its Paralympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
The Tokyo 2020 Paralympics were postponed to 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the official Games name remained Tokyo 2020. Para taekwondo was added to the programme together with badminton, giving both sports their first Paralympic medal events.
Paralympic taekwondo is a combat sport for athletes with eligible physical impairments. The Paralympic version focuses on the kyorugi combat discipline, and athletes compete in weight classes. Rules and permitted techniques are adapted to support fair and safe competition.
Taekwondo should not be confused with para judo, which has been part of the Summer Paralympics since 1988. Karate was not the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic debut sport named here. The new inclusion reflected the continuing expansion of the Paralympic programme.
