Which sport did J.K. Rowling invent as a wizarding game in the Harry Potter series?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling invented Quidditch as a wizarding sport in the Harry Potter series.

Quidditch is played by two teams of seven players flying on broomsticks. Each team has three Chasers, two Beaters, one Keeper, and one Seeker. Players use magical balls, including the Quaffle, Bludgers, and the Golden Snitch.

A team scores 10 points by sending the Quaffle through one of three opposing hoops. Catching the Golden Snitch scores 150 points and usually ends the match, although the team with the most points wins rather than automatically the team whose Seeker catches it.

The sport is fictional, but real-world versions have been played internationally under adapted rules. It is often confused with wizard chess, which is a separate magical game appearing in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
