Which Harry Potter character is J.K. Rowling’s first published protagonist?

The story behind the answer

Harry Potter is J.K. Rowling’s first published protagonist.

Harry is the central character of the seven-book Harry Potter series, beginning with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 1997. He is introduced as an orphan living with his aunt, uncle, and cousin before learning that he is a wizard and has been accepted at Hogwarts.

The series follows Harry from childhood into young adulthood as he develops friendships, confronts prejudice and danger, and faces Lord Voldemort. His relationships with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger provide the story’s main friendship trio.

Other characters, including Dumbledore, Draco, and Hermione, receive substantial attention, but they are not the protagonist of the original series. Rowling later wrote stories and companion works expanding the setting beyond Harry’s point of view.
