Which special district contains Port Moresby?

The story behind the answer

Which special district contains Port Moresby? The answer is the National Capital District.

Port Moresby is located within Papua New Guinea's National Capital District, commonly abbreviated NCD. Unlike most of the country's administrative areas, the NCD is a special district centred on the national capital and is not part of a province such as Central Province.

The district contains the urbanised Port Moresby area and is divided into three local-level government areas: Moresby North-East, Moresby North-West and Moresby South. The city is therefore both the capital of Papua New Guinea and the administrative centre of the district that surrounds it.

A frequent mistake is choosing Central Province because Port Moresby is geographically close to it and the surrounding region is often discussed together with Central Province. Administratively, however, the capital has its own district status. The National Capital District also recognises the traditional Motu and Koitabu landowners through the Motu Koita Assembly.
