Bauerfield International Airport serves which Oceanian capital city?

The story behind the answer

Bauerfield International Airport serves Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu.

The airport is also officially known as Port Vila International Airport and is located on Efate, the island containing Vanuatu’s capital. Its airport codes are VLI and NVVV, making it the principal international gateway for travellers visiting Port Vila and the surrounding islands.

The airfield began during World War II, when American forces developed facilities on Efate as part of the Pacific war effort. It was initially known as Efate Field, Vila Field or McDonald Field, before being named Bauer Field after U.S. Marine Corps lieutenant colonel Harold W. Bauer.

The airport is sometimes mistaken for an airport serving another Pacific capital because Vanuatu’s geography includes many islands and airfields. However, Bauerfield is specifically the airport of Port Vila. Its runway was rebuilt in 2019 and is long enough to handle aircraft as large as an Airbus A330.
