Which Oceanian capital is the seat of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat?

The story behind the answer

Suva is the Oceanian capital that hosts the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.

Suva is Fiji’s capital and the administrative home of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, the organisation’s permanent regional office. The Secretariat supports cooperation among Pacific governments on issues including trade, development, transport, security and climate change.

The Forum began in 1971 as the South Pacific Forum, with its first meeting held in Wellington, New Zealand. Its Secretariat was established as a trade bureau in 1972 and later evolved into the South Pacific Bureau for Economic Co-operation before adopting its present name in 2000.

A common mix-up is confusing Suva’s role as the Secretariat’s seat with the location of the Forum’s annual leaders’ meeting. Summits rotate among member countries, so cities such as Apia, Nukuʻalofa and Honiara may host meetings even though the permanent Secretariat remains in Suva.
