Which South American capital is home to Estadio Centenario?

The story behind the answer

Which South American capital is home to Estadio Centenario? The answer is Montevideo, Uruguay.

Estadio Centenario stands in Montevideo’s Parque Batlle neighborhood and serves as Uruguay’s national football stadium. It was built between 1929 and 1930 specifically for the inaugural FIFA World Cup, hosted by Uruguay. The stadium opened on July 18, 1930, Uruguay’s Constitution Day.

The venue hosted the 1930 World Cup final, in which Uruguay defeated Argentina 4–2. It remains the principal home ground of the Uruguay national team, although local clubs have also used it for major matches. Its name commemorates the centenary of Uruguay’s first constitution.

A common mix-up is confusing the Centenario with Montevideo’s Gran Parque Central, another historic football ground. FIFA declared Estadio Centenario the first Historical Monument of World Football in 1983, and it remains the only building to have received that recognition. The stadium currently holds about 60,000 spectators.
