Answer
Paramaribo
Fort Zeelandia is a 17th-century fort in which South American capital? Paramaribo, Suriname.
Fort Zeelandia stands in Paramaribo, on the Suriname River. The site began as a French wooden fort around 1640, but English colonists strengthened it in 1651 and called it Fort Willoughby. Dutch forces captured the fort in 1667 and renamed it Fort Zeelandia, after the Dutch province of Zeeland.
The fortress became an important colonial stronghold and later served administrative and military purposes. Today it houses the Surinamese Museum, whose collections include archaeology, ethnography, colonial furniture, textiles, art, and historical photographs.
The name can cause confusion because another Fort Zeelandia exists in Guyana, on Fort Island in the Essequibo River. That Guyanese fort dates mainly to the 18th century, whereas the landmark in this question is the 17th-century fortress in Paramaribo. Fort Zeelandia also has a darker modern history: it was associated with the December Murders of 1982.
