Which South American capital is located on the island of Cayenne? Cayenne, French Guiana.
Cayenne is the capital and prefecture of French Guiana, France’s overseas region and department on the northeastern coast of South America. The city occupies part of the former island of Cayenne, near the mouth of the Cayenne River on the Atlantic coast.
French settlement in the area began in the 17th century, although the colony changed hands several times among France, the Netherlands, and England before French control was restored. Cayenne became a municipality in 1790. An Anglo-Portuguese force captured it in 1809, and it was administered from Brazil until France regained control in 1817.
Cayenne is often confused with the wider territory of French Guiana, which includes other communities such as Kourou and Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni. It is also unrelated to cayenne pepper in origin as a place-name question, although the city gave its name to the spice. Nearby Paramaribo is the capital of Suriname, roughly northwest of Cayenne.
