“Love on Top” won Beyoncé the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance.
The song appears on Beyoncé’s fourth studio album, 4, released in 2011. It is an upbeat R&B and soul track built around repeated key changes near the end, a vocal feature that intensifies the song’s celebratory mood. Beyoncé co-wrote it with Terius Nash, Shea Taylor, and Beyoncé’s longtime collaborator Christopher “Tricky” Stewart.
“Love on Top” became especially associated with a 2011 live performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, where Beyoncé revealed her pregnancy at the end of the performance. The song later received strong acclaim for its classic R&B influences and demanding vocal arrangement.
At the 55th Annual Grammy Awards in 2013, it won Best Traditional R&B Performance. That category is different from Best R&B Song, which recognizes songwriting rather than the recording’s performance.
