Which song from The Lion King won the Academy Award for Best Original Song?

The story behind the answer

“Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

The song was written by composer Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice for the 1994 animated film. It accompanies the growing romance between Simba and Nala, although the theatrical sequence also includes brief contributions from Timon and Pumbaa. Kristle Edwards, Joseph Williams, Sally Dworsky, Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella perform the in-film version, while John sings the closing-credits recording.

The song’s role changed during development. It was initially considered as a number primarily for Timon and Pumbaa, but John objected to treating it as only a comedy song. He believed it should function as a genuine Disney love song and communicate Simba and Nala’s feelings more directly.

The award is sometimes confused with the film’s other famous songs. “Circle of Life” and “Hakuna Matata” were nominated for major honors, but neither won this Academy Award. The same song also received the Golden Globe for Best Original Song.
