Which song did Beyoncé sample in “Crazy in Love”?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love” samples “Are You My Woman (Tell Me So)” by the Chi-Lites.

Released in 2003, “Crazy in Love” was the lead single from Beyoncé’s debut solo album, Dangerously in Love. Its instantly recognizable horn hook comes from the 1970s Chi-Lites recording, written by Eugene Record and released in 1970.

Producer Rich Harrison built the modern track around the sampled horn figure, while Jay-Z added a guest rap verse. The combination helped create a bright, forceful sound that became one of Beyoncé’s signature recordings and her first solo number-one single on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The sampled recording is sometimes mistaken for a song by a later hip-hop or R&B act because the horn phrase became strongly associated with Beyoncé’s version. The original source, however, is a Chicago soul group’s 1970 single.
