“Break My Soul” became Beyoncé’s first solo number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 since 2008.
The song was released on June 20, 2022, as the lead single from Renaissance. It is built around house and dance influences, with production and songwriting credits involving Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Terius “The-Dream” Nash, and other collaborators.
“Break My Soul” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. Its success made Beyoncé the first female artist to place at least 20 songs in the chart’s top 10, according to Billboard’s accounting at the time.
The earlier solo number-one was “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” which topped the chart in 2008. That distinction excludes Beyoncé’s group work with Destiny’s Child and collaborations released under shared billing. The song’s upbeat message about leaving exhausting work and reclaiming freedom became especially prominent during the post-pandemic period.
