Ham is the son of Noah traditionally linked with the people of Canaan.
Genesis 10 lists Canaan as one of Ham’s four sons, alongside Cush, Mizraim, and Put. The same chapter presents these descendants in a genealogical table of nations, which is why Ham is connected with Canaan in traditional readings.
The story of Noah’s sons in Genesis 9 also mentions Canaan after an incident involving Noah and Ham. Noah’s curse is directed at Canaan, not explicitly at Ham, a detail that later interpreters have debated extensively.
Older religious traditions sometimes used these genealogies to make broad claims about entire populations. Modern readers should distinguish the ancient literary genealogy from later racial interpretations, which are not a reliable historical classification of modern peoples.
