Shem is the son of Noah traditionally linked to the ancestry of Abraham.
Genesis 11 presents a genealogy from Shem through several generations to Abram, later called Abraham. In that sequence, Shem is followed by Arpachshad, Shelah, Eber, Peleg, Reu, Serug, Nahor, and Terah, who is named as Abram's father.
Noah's three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—are introduced before and during the Flood story. Later biblical genealogies assign different peoples to their lines, but those traditional associations should not be treated as modern biological or linguistic classifications. The term “Semitic,” for example, was later formed from Shem's name, while modern scholarship uses language-family evidence rather than the Genesis genealogy alone.
