Which son of Noah is named first in the Quran’s Ark account in Surah Hud?

The story behind the answer

Noah’s son is unnamed in the Quran’s Ark account in Surah Hud.

Surah Hud describes Noah calling to his son to board the Ark and warning him not to remain with the disbelievers. The son refuses, saying he will seek refuge on a mountain, but a wave comes between them and he is drowned. The passage does not provide a personal name for this son.

Later Islamic commentators and popular retellings sometimes identify him with a name such as Canaan or Kan‘an. Those identifications come from later tradition and interpretation rather than from the wording of Surah Hud itself. The Quran’s account is clear about his relationship to Noah and his refusal, but not about his personal name.

This is distinct from Genesis, which names Noah’s sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth but does not tell the same episode of an unnamed son refusing the Ark. The scriptural sources should therefore be kept separate.
