Shem is the son of Noah listed first in Genesis after the Flood.
Genesis 9:18 names Shem, Ham, and Japheth as Noah’s sons, and Genesis 10:1 repeats that order when introducing the genealogies of the sons after the Flood. In the biblical narrative, Shem receives particular attention in the genealogy leading to Abram, later known as Abraham, in Genesis 11.
The order of names does not always function as a simple statement of birth order in every passage. Genesis 9:24 calls Ham Noah’s youngest son, while Genesis 10:21 contains wording that has generated translation and interpretation questions about Shem and Japheth. For a question about the first name listed after the Flood, however, the textual order is clear: Shem comes first.
Canaan is another name that can cause confusion. He is identified as Ham’s son, not as one of Noah’s three sons.
