Which skyscraper is the tallest building in Europe?

The story behind the answer

Lakhta Center is the tallest building in Europe.

The mixed-use skyscraper stands in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and reaches 462 metres to its architectural top. Its twisting glass form narrows toward a pointed spire, giving it a distinctive silhouette on the Gulf of Finland. The complex includes offices, public spaces and an observation deck.

Construction began in 2012, and the tower was completed in 2018. It became Europe’s tallest building, overtaking Moscow’s Federation Tower. The project was developed as the headquarters complex for Gazprom, whose offices occupy much of the tower.

The European record can be confusing because definitions of Europe’s boundary vary geographically and politically. Lakhta Center is nevertheless the building conventionally listed as Europe’s tallest in standard architectural rankings. Its height is measured to the top of the spire, not merely to the occupied floor or roof.
