Which skyscraper in Frankfurt was Germany’s tallest building when it opened in 1997?
Answer
Commerzbank Tower
Answer
Commerzbank Tower
Frankfurt’s Commerzbank Tower was Germany’s tallest building when it opened in 1997.
Designed by Foster + Partners, the tower rises above Frankfurt’s banking district and uses a distinctive triangular plan. Its design incorporates large sky gardens that spiral around the building, bringing planted outdoor spaces into the high-rise workplace.
The building reached a roof height of about 259 metres, with an antenna bringing its total height to roughly 300 metres. It remained Europe’s tallest building until 2003, when Moscow’s Triumph Palace surpassed it.
The Commerzbank Tower is sometimes confused with Frankfurt’s Messeturm, another famous skyscraper in the city. Messeturm was completed earlier and has a recognizable pyramid-shaped roof, while Commerzbank Tower is known for its triangular form and vertical sequence of gardens.
