Capital Gate is the Abu Dhabi skyscraper that holds the Guinness record for the world's furthest-leaning man-made tower.
The 35-story building leans 18 degrees westward, more than four times the lean of Italy's famous Tower of Pisa. Its dramatic curve was deliberately engineered rather than caused by settlement or structural failure.
Designed by the international architecture firm RMJM, Capital Gate was developed by the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company beside the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. Construction began in 2007, and the tower was completed in 2011.
The structure uses a specially engineered foundation with 490 piles driven about 30 metres into the ground. The floor plates are stacked vertically at lower levels and gradually offset at higher levels, creating the visible overhang and lean.
Capital Gate is sometimes confused with Abu Dhabi's Etihad Towers, another prominent group of high-rises in the city. The Guinness title belongs specifically to Capital Gate's measured 18-degree inclination.
