Taiwan’s Taipei 101 opened in 2004.
The skyscraper officially opened on December 31, 2004, with a New Year’s Eve celebration. It was developed as a major commercial and cultural landmark in Taipei’s Xinyi District.
Taipei 101 became the world’s tallest building by architectural height when it opened, taking the title from Malaysia’s Petronas Towers. It held that distinction until Dubai’s Burj Khalifa surpassed it in 2010.
The tower’s name refers to its 101 above-ground floors. Its architecture combines local cultural symbolism with advanced structural engineering, including a large tuned mass damper designed to limit movement from wind and earthquakes.
