Q1 is the tallest building in Australia by architectural height.
The residential tower stands in Surfers Paradise on Queensland’s Gold Coast and reaches 322.5 metres to its architectural top. Designed by Atelier SDG, Q1 was completed in 2005 and contains 78 above-ground floors. Its name refers to “Queensland Number One” and also celebrates Australia’s Olympic athletes of the twentieth century.
Q1’s form was influenced by the Sydney 2000 Olympic torch and by the natural shapes of the region. The tower includes a distinctive glass-sided observation attraction near the top, as well as apartments, recreational facilities and a hotel-style resort complex.
Australia 108 in Melbourne is a frequent source of confusion because it is an exceptionally tall Australian residential skyscraper. However, Q1 remains the country’s tallest by architectural height. Height rankings can vary when measured to roof, architectural top or antenna, so the measurement standard matters.
