Which skyscraper in Toronto was completed in 1976 and remains Canada’s tallest freestanding structure?

The story behind the answer

The CN Tower is the Toronto skyscraper completed in 1976 that remains Canada’s tallest freestanding structure.

Telecommunications company Canadian National commissioned the tower to improve television and radio signals in a rapidly growing city. John Andrews International designed it with Webb Zerafa Menkes Housden Partnership and инженерական firm NCK Engineering.

Its concrete shaft and distinctive antenna made it the world’s tallest freestanding structure from 1975 until 2007, when Dubai’s Burj Khalifa surpassed it. The tower is also a major visitor attraction, with observation levels and the EdgeWalk around the main pod.

“Freestanding” means the structure does not depend on guy wires or another building for support. The CN Tower is therefore different from a mast supported by cables.
