Which skyscraper in Mexico City was designed by Augusto H. Álvarez?
Answer
Torre Latinoamericana
Answer
Torre Latinoamericana
Mexico City’s Torre Latinoamericana was designed by Augusto H. Álvarez.
Augusto H. Álvarez designed Torre Latinoamericana, which was completed in 1956 in the historic center of Mexico City. The tower’s steel-frame construction and deep foundation were especially significant because the city sits on soft lakebed sediments and is vulnerable to major earthquakes.
The building was developed by the insurance company La Latinoamericana, S.A., whose name gave the tower its familiar title. It became an important early example of earthquake-resistant high-rise design in a difficult geological setting.
Torre Latinoamericana is often remembered for surviving the 1957 earthquake with limited damage, although later earthquakes also tested the building. Its observation deck offers views of the dense central city, while the tower’s museum presents its history, engineering, and construction. It should not be confused with the much newer Torre Mayor or Torre Reforma.
