Which skyscraper in Hong Kong was designed by architect I. M. Pei?

The story behind the answer

The Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong was designed by architect I. M. Pei.

Completed in 1990, the tower was designed for the Bank of China and became one of Hong Kong’s most recognizable landmarks. Its sharply angular form is made from four triangular prism sections that rise from a square base. The geometric structure was intended to suggest the growth of bamboo, a traditional symbol of vitality and prosperity.

The building’s structural expression also reflects Pei’s interest in using geometry as both an architectural and engineering tool. Its exterior bracing carries substantial loads, allowing the tower to achieve a distinctive profile while reducing the need for conventional columns.

Visitors sometimes confuse it with Hong Kong’s International Finance Centre or International Commerce Centre, which are separate towers. The Bank of China Tower remains especially notable for bringing Pei’s modernist vocabulary to the city’s dense Central district.
