Which skyscraper in Ho Chi Minh City became Vietnam’s tallest building when it opened in 2018?

The story behind the answer

Landmark 81 became Vietnam’s tallest building when it opened in 2018.

The tower is part of the Vinhomes Central Park development in Ho Chi Minh City, on the western bank of the Saigon River. It rises 461.5 metres and contains 81 floors, making its name a direct reference to its floor count and landmark status.

Designed by the architectural firm Atkins, the building was completed in 2018 and surpassed Keangnam Landmark 72 in Hanoi as Vietnam’s tallest structure. Its stepped, tapering form was inspired in part by bundles of bamboo, a plant strongly associated with Vietnamese culture.

Landmark 81 includes a hotel, apartments, offices, retail areas and observation facilities. It is sometimes confused with Bitexco Financial Tower, another famous Ho Chi Minh City skyscraper, but Bitexco is substantially shorter and is recognizable for its projecting helipad. Landmark 81 remains a major symbol of Vietnam’s rapid urban development.
